API Presses Trump for Pro-Drill, Pro-LNG Agenda

As the U.S. energy landscape braces for a changing of the guard in Washington, the American Petroleum Institute (API) has rolled out a bold “5 Point Policy Roadmap” aimed at bolstering America’s energy independence. With the recent election of Donald Trump, API is urging the president-elect and the Republican Congress to reform restrictive regulations and expedite the permitting processes for oil, gas, and LNG projects.

In a letter to Trump, API CEO Mike Sommers emphasized the need to counteract “extreme regulations” that, according to the group, have hindered U.S. energy progress.

The API’s letter outlines several demands, not the least of which includes the creation of a new five-year offshore leasing program. The group is also requesting fewer restrictions on onshore federal lands and a streamlined LNG export permit process.

These measures would not only fortify U.S. energy security, the API claims but could also help curb inflation by increasing the domestic energy supply. The demands are laregly in line with Trump’s promise to enhance U.S. energy output, particularly with offshore drilling and LNG exports.

“We stand ready to work with you and Congress to reverse course and advance a robust vision for securing America’s energy dominance,” Sommers’ letter reads in part.

The U.S. LNG sector reached record exports of 11.9 billion cubic feet per day in 2023 and has become a vital player in global markets, especially in Europe, where it has partially replaced Russian pipeline gas. Despite this success, U.S. LNG projects face hurdles from environmental litigation, contractor delays, and policy shifts under the Biden administration, including a temporary permit pause.
